Museum of Somerset - Family Activities

We offer an extraordinary programme of events for families, designed to develop interests and skills in an environment where a love for history can flourish.

Enjoy learning together through a range of engaging and lively activities such as site trails, themed sessions and family fun days.

Our object-rich sessions are designed to appeal to all ages and interests and link to the rich and varied collections we care for.

Toddler Explorers
First Friday of every month
This session allows toddlers to discover museum collections through play and active learning and is suitable for age 1-3. We hold morning and afternoon sessions with subjects ranging from the Ice Age to Egypt. Booking advisable, please contact the museum.

Family Fun
Last Saturday of every month
This session offers free family activities on various themes providing access to our museum collections and temporary exhibitions. These sessions encourage all members of the family to learn together in a relaxed environment.

Booked family learning sessions
Throughout the school holidays we run bookable family sessions with the aim of developing children’s skills and creativity. These include object handling and activities covering a wide range of subjects from ‘World War II – Life at Home’ to ‘Digging up the Past’.

Object Handling

Families can handle real and replica museum objects and learn about various collections in an informal setting. There’s something for everyone; themes include fossils, World War Two, Victorians, seaside, archaeology and mystery. This takes place every Tuesday. FREE.

‘Talk and Tea’
A talk with an expert, followed by tea and cake. An opportunity to enjoy the museum and engage with staff working across all areas of Heritage including archaeology, archives and learning. Booking advisable, please contact us. This takes place on the second Friday of the month. £5.
